The school building

The playground of Saint Brigid's Primary School

Origins of the school

Canon Dillon opened St Bigid’s in Haddington Road in 1902. He had been given a legacy of £500.00 for the purpose and largely augmented from his own resources and those of the Holy Faith Sisters the school was built on land reserved since 1850.

From a journal kept by the Sisters there were 68 children present, including 30 boys who had been brought in from the Boys' School by Fr. Wall.

Extensive building had taken place in areas close by: O'Connell Gardens, Malone Gardens, Bath Ave, Derrynane Gardens, Pembroke Gardens, Vavasour Square, and Lansdowne Park. By 1930 there were 530 pupils on the rolls.

School days

In 1932 Eva started school at St. Brigid’s, she was four years old. Throughout her life, Eva clearly remembered her first day at school. She would often tell the story of her mammy dragging her, screaming, all the way to school, day after day. When asked how the situation resolved itself, Eva would say ‘mammy was having none of it so I just had to stop screaming and get on with it!’

In later life Eva said that it was the Sisters of the Holy Faith that gave her ‘a good grounding in the Catholic faith’.

Playground games

During the research for this section of the website, I came across one school projects (aged 6). He had been asked to contact his grandparents to find out about the games they played at school.
